Why August Is the Perfect Time to Reflect, Reset, and Reconnect

We tend to think of new beginnings in two ways—January 1st or when life forces us into one.
A new year. A new job. A new relationship.
Or… a crisis that shakes things up.

But here’s the truth:
You don’t have to wait for the calendar—or a breakdown—to start fresh.

That’s why I love August.
It’s this quiet, in-between month.
Summer is starting to fade, but the year isn’t over.
The rush of fall is coming, but you still have breathing room.
It’s a built-in reset button… if you choose to use it.

The pause before the push.

August is like standing on the trail before the next climb.
You can see the uphill ahead—but you also have a chance to catch your breath, look around, and ask:

  • Am I headed in the right direction?

  • Am I carrying too much?

  • Do I even like where this trail is going?

For a lot of men, we skip that pause.
We just keep moving—head down, legs burning—because stopping feels lazy.
But if you never pause, you miss the chance to course-correct before exhaustion sets in.

Reflection: Looking back before you look forward.

Here’s the thing—reflection isn’t about overthinking.
It’s about awareness.

This August, take an honest inventory of the past few months:

  • Where have I felt most alive?

  • Where have I felt most drained?

  • What’s been working—and what hasn’t?

You might be surprised at what patterns you notice when you slow down long enough to name them.

Reset: Letting go of what’s weighing you down.

Reflection without action is just mental clutter.
The next step is resetting—choosing what needs to shift.

Maybe it’s:

  • Scaling back a commitment you’ve been dreading.

  • Adding in something life-giving, like a weekly walk with a friend.

  • Finally setting a boundary you’ve been avoiding.

The goal isn’t to overhaul your life overnight.
It’s to make one or two intentional changes that help you move toward the man you actually want to be.

Reconnect: With God, with people, with yourself.

Burnout and busyness have a way of shrinking our worlds.
We become disconnected—sometimes without realizing it.

This is the perfect month to:

  • Reconnect with God in a way that feels personal, not pressured.

  • Reconnect with a friend you’ve been “meaning to catch up with.”

  • Reconnect with yourself by doing something just for joy’s sake—not because it’s productive.

Because here’s the truth:
No matter how much you accomplish, if you’re living disconnected, it won’t feel like enough.

A quiet challenge for August.

Before September ramps up, take a few hours—just for you.
Sit somewhere quiet.
Leave your phone behind.
Ask yourself: What do I want the rest of the year to look like?

Then take one small step toward that vision.
It doesn’t have to be flashy.
It just has to be real.

If you want a guide for that process:

This is exactly the kind of work I do with men—helping them slow down, take inventory, and move toward a life that feels whole.
